hi all,
My neice/nephews are aged about 8 - 12, and so far love games like hey that's my fish and take a break. The 12 year old is now joining in with more adult games, but the others aren't quite there yet. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions that aren't quite adult level games, but are still strategic and engaging that they can all play together? |

I wondered if anyone had any suggestions that aren't quite adult level games, but are still strategic and engaging that they can all play together? You might want to consider these 3 different types of games to gradually introduce them to the bigger games : 1) Heckmeck: Dice game with a push-your-luck element. Kids just love picking up worms, dont they ?? Plays in about 20-30 minutes 2) Mamma Mia! : card game about making Pizzas. A bit of memory involved but kids usaully pick it up quickly. Plays in 30-45 minutes 3) Ticket to Ride ( Basic Set) : Adults might have to help initially and you can play the first few hands openly as a demonstration and then start again. Thereafter the children can usually manage on their own and they love the colourful boards and the plastic trains. Plays in about 60-75 minutes. I hope this helps. All the games are readily available through online shops and some in the larger shopping malls if you live near one. They can also be found on Ebay. |

Thanks meeple - I'll keep an eye out for the first two. I think that while the 12 year old picked up ticket to ride quickly, the younger ones might find it a bit tougher. But i wondered if I took out some elements - like the passangers - that might help to simplify it a bit?

I was going to suggest Ticket to Ride too. You want the basic (American) version though. No passengers.

You might try "The Kids of Carcassonne", a simpler version of Carcassonne aimed at children and apparently very good... I also believe there is a kids version of Settlers of Catan...

Kids of Catan is more suitable for younger children.

I have just started a games club at school (year 7s) and an ancient game called 'Dungeon' has been a hit with them. Risk not so much so as they seem to lose interest as soon as they perceive they are losing. I should mention they are all boys as well.

A game of risk is enough to put a man off board games for life. Why do people play 3 hour games of luck?

Chateau Roquefort
A game where players move mice around to try and capture cheese on a board where the cheers keep moving around. Needs to be seen to be appreciated as it's a great board. There are several layers to it with the cheese tiles iles on the bottom, rooms on top of that and roofs on top of that. The game takes a bit of memory (as you can only see what's under a roof piece if there's a mouse in the room underneath it). The cheese tiles can be moved around by the players too (a bit like Labyrinth if you've played that) plus there are some holes too so an unfortunate mouse can fall down into the dungeon and be out of the game. Each turn a player spends their allocation of action points using any of their mice. Great game with adults too who looking for a light game. Adults can play against kids too. Einfach Genial Knobelspass Place domino-esque tiles (ecah has two symboles on it) onto a grid which shows a load of the symbols. Players must find the right combination and placement of tiles so that the whole mat is covered by the pieces without any going over the edge and so that each symbol is covered by a tile with the same symbol. Each player has their own mat. The mats can be different difficulty so players of different skills can play against each other. I ghave this to a friend with kids from 4 to 11 and it's been a big hit. Blokus Place Tetris liike pieces onto a board. The person that places the most wins. The tricky part ios that your opponents (usually purposefully) get in your way. |

Hm.... you know the reason I get annoyed with events is when they purpously make it hard to get a mask. I mean, how on earth can areanet expect to have people online during work/school hours?

I vote for Pokémon Ryen, as its one of the games that first attracted me to game-making.
It also have graphics with a lot of effort put into them, and an awsome gameplay. Good luck, SL Cheerz I cant complainparadocs -------------------- Too lazy to set a custom title hedonism
